Under 16's make it two from two in 2018

An appetising Vale derby was on offer for Llantwit Major RFC Under 16’s second match of 2018 as they made the short trip to Old Penarthians. Old Pens suffered a blow before a ball was even kicked with several players being made unavailable through illness, however the visitors had enough players to help out and get a 15 aside match underway. Llantwit started strong keeping Old Pens pinned back in their own half and it wasn’t long before the early pressure told. After stretching the defence fly half Ben Reilly put a kick in behind the defence which Sam Brown grounded first to open the scoring. Buoyed by their confident start Llantwit started moving the ball with gusto and after several phases of high tempo rugby lock Peter Mitchell went over for his first try of the season. Llantwit’s third try was pure Scarlets as they moved the ball to the wide channel’s before switching back to the middle of the field. After a neat setup the players swung left and utilised an overlap to put Sam Croucher in and gave them a 17-0 lead. Old Pens were trying to make inroads into the Llantwit lead with a strong pick and go approach but a good turnover by Gus Wellard allowed the ball to be spread wide and Chris Ahearn sprinted 50 yards to get his first try of the game. Old Pens then enjoyed a period of sustained pressure on the Llantwit line but were held up just short resulting in a Llantwit scrum. Not even considering the kick, Llantwit were soon 5 yards away from scoring as a pick and go from the base put them 90 metres downfield. The proceeding play saw Chris Ahearn get his second try and helped the visitors finish the half 27-0 up.

A change of players helping out Old Pens saw double try scorer Chris Ahearn, Ben Reilly and winger George Burzcak going over to the opposition. It didn’t take long for Ahearn to make his influence felt as within minutes he helped get Old Pens back in the game with an excellent solo try. Old Pens now had their tails up and continued to pressure the Llantwit defence. Expecting the hosts to keep it tight, Llantwit were caught out when a chip over the top put the Old Pens centre through the gap. After being obstructed when trying to ground it the referee had no choice but to award a penalty try. With the lead narrowing Llantwit begun to revert back to risky rugby and were making more mistakes. A series of injuries and stoppages saw the game get a bit messy and Llantwit started to get tighter in their play. That didn’t bother Centre Cyan Baron who got his second try in 2 weeks when he steamrollered the would tacklers out of the way to restore a healthy lead. Old Pens however hit back with a try of their own and at 34-19 the game could still go either way. As Old Pens begun to tire Llantwit took advantage with 2 further tries, firstly a close-range drive from Peter Mitchell before Centre Sam Croucher out paced the covering defence to get his second and as the whistle blew Llantwit had secured a 46-19 victory. Llantwit enjoyed a second victory of 2018 and look to be building momentum heading towards their ground-breaking Sweden tour in June. Next week see’s Clwb Rygbi visit the Recreation Ground and Llantwit will hope to put in another positive performance.
