Under 16's 3 wins from 3 in 6 nations challenge ....next stop Sweden

After an arduous winter Llantwit Major under 16’s sprung into life to rediscover their rugby mojo just in time for the climax of their junior rugby careers. This rejuvenation coincided with the exciting 6 nations challenge pitting them against Canadian, Italian and English opposition throughout April along with a couple of games against regular Welsh foes.

First up was a match against the Ontario based Adam Scott Collegiate who brought with them 31 tourists ranging from Under 19’s to U16’s. To balance the scales the 16’s were ably supported by 6 1st year youth boys and the combined team fought hard to emerge 22-20 victors. With little time to integrate and prepare this result was made even more special given the physical mismatch they boys were up against.

After some impressive victories against our domestic foes in South Gower and St Joes the team moved onto a match up against Rugby Oltremella under 16’s. Another combined affair, this time however the 16’s combined with the younger lads from the U15’s to take on the tourists from Brescia. Yet again it seemed our lads would be physically outgunned however the speed and flair of the Llantwit players was too much for our guests and after a 0-10 first half deficit they won the game 24-17. A sign of things to come for future years in youth rugby and a great Friday night of rugby up at the Recreation Ground.

Less than 36 hours later the squad met again to take on the 3rd leg of the international challenge, this time facing Northampton Men’s Own. Weary from their Friday night encounter the 16’s were slow to start, however yet again their pace and guile was too much for the English tourists who struggled to contain the home side. Spurred on by the fixture being their final match to be played in front of their supporting parents the boys won 42-29 and ended their domestic season on an incredible high. Three international opponents faced and three great victories and their attention now turns to their end of season tour which promises to be an incredible adventure.

On June 15th the boys will depart for an 8 day tour to Sweden where they will take on opponents from the host nation and Denmark. Given the opponents already played this will be a truly memorable way for these boys to finish their junior blood and blacks rugby careers and with such bright futures in front of some we can hope that they will commit to youth rugby.
