Narrow loss for U13s

The 15 available players of Llantwit Major RFC U13 Tigers travelled away to Penallta for what threatened to be a wet and windy game this Sunday.

Just in time for kick off however, and to the relief of the many gathered parents, the wind died, the rain stopped and the sun came out, warming everyone up perfectly to enjoy what turned out to be a great game of rugby.

With the home pitch playable but heavy, both teams rose to the challenge and contributed to a tightly fought contest.  Llantwit Major flew into an early lead within a minute of kick off with a spectacular run by outside centre Fred O’Carroll, continuing the impressive form seen in recent games.  Penallta however struck back with two tries to take the lead, only for this to be snatched away before half time by another Fred  O’Carroll score, this time converted by Ethan Harding.

The second half proved to be even more enthralling with the Tigers initially extending their lead with a long range try from the dependable Dan Bartlett, converted again by Ethan Harding.  Penallta then struck back with two quick tries to regain the lead, before the Tigers responded with two tries of their own, a second for Dan Bartlett followed by a blistering hat-trick try from Fred O’Carroll, the latter converted once again by Ethan Harding.

With an 11-point lead approaching the end of the game it looked to be all over, but Penallta showed real determination and skill, especially with some astute tactical kicking to make their way back into the Llantwit Major half where they struck once again to bring the match back to a single score.

With the clock deep into the red, and with the Tigers reduced to 14 players following injury to hooker Kian Barnett, Penallta took advantage of a tired defence and squeezed over the line for a final try.  Pressure was then on the kicker who, to his credit slotted the conversion to seal a one-point win for the home team.

Although disappointed with a loss, the Tigers should be extremely proud of the way they played the game.  Special mentions to the points scorers already listed, to debutante Jakub Jeziorski, and also to man of the match, full back Dexter Milburn who still in his first season with the team contributed with some powerful breaks and crucial tackles.

Congratulations to Penallta on their hard fought win.  The Tigers eagerly look forward to the return fixture in March.
