14's battle to tough win

Llantwit Major Under 14’s produced a gritty performance to celebrate a rare victory over a Kenfig Hill side at the Recreation Field on Sunday. Second half tries from Tyler Lee (2), Aaron Moce and Dylan Rees put the home side in a position to hold on for a victory and set up a grandstand finish that could have seen the visitors take the spoils.

Kenfig Hill dominated territory in the first half but failed to capitalise on several good scoring opportunities with the home defence scrambling at times to keep it scoreless. With the conditions making ball handling difficult both back lines fell foul to the last pass going astray when opportunities presented themselves. On the few occasions Llantwit did secure good field position their struggling line out ensured that Kenfig Hill were afforded an easy exit and this kept home possession to a minimum.

With the scores tied at 0-0 at half time the expectations for the second half to come couldn’t have been expected. Within minutes of the restart Kenfig Hill opened the scoring in spectacular fashion. With the away forwards recycling the ball well in the home 22, Kenfig’s outside half put in a sublime cross-field kick that was secured on by the full back and touched down despite the covering tacklers. One but of rugby magic seemed to light the spark to the game and soon the home side had responded with two scores of their own through centre Tyler Lee.

With the game now resembling a classic tennis tie-break Kenfig Hill continued to make the most of their territory and scored two well worked tries through their powerful lock to go 17-12 in front. Llantwit hit back with two quick fire tries. The first was an Arron Moce classic from 5 yards to tie the game before fly half Dylan rees broke away from the defence to convert and restore the home teams 7 point advantage. Supporters nerves got the full suspense treatment when Kenfig Hill scored to bring the match within 2 points.

Kenfig Hill had opportunities to build momentum but couldn’t get a foothold in a good area and a knock on ended the game and gave the home time a narrow victory. An excellent match with the first Kenfig Hill try being one for the memory bank. Its been a good few weeks for the Llantwit Major team with some promising performances and excellent character shown. The team head to Caldicot before having a week off for Easter.
